One of the reasons that many diets fail is that once the diet plan has come to an end, it seems very easy for the weight to slowly creep back on again.
 The key to losing weight successfully is to find a plan that helps to keeps the weight off even when the actual diet program has finished.

Several years ago, my parents were off on a holiday to Australia so we had to be quite particular about the weight of their luggage. As someone who has never really been worried about my weight, I’ve never really been interested about weighing myself. My size 12 (UK) clothes fit me and that was all that mattered as far as I was concerned. However for some reason, and I have no idea what possessed me to do this, but I got on the scales after weighing the luggage and was surprised to find that I weighed 11stone 4, which is just under 160lbs. Hmm quite heavy for a 5ft 4” girl I thought. So it seems, did everyone else, so much so, that no one would believe me when I told them my weight.

To prove my point, I tried out several different scales and got the same reading each time. This meant that my body mass index was over 25, and apparently should be around 22. So there it was, I had to face it – yes I was a little over weight. So what to do, well as I said before I’d never really worried about my weight, as far as I was concerned, it was fine. I’d never really tried diets and was never really that keen on keeping fit, although I have to confess, I have always had quite active jobs.

After a holiday of my own, I decided I probably should do something about it and started doing a little research as to what foods do what, which are good for you and what combination would work.
Finally I embarked on a plan, which was simple and easy to follow as well as keeping me feeling full enough throughout the day, thus avoiding the need to snack when I shouldn’t.

I decided that for three weeks I could be strict with myself, if I really wanted to lose the weight then what was three weeks when it would benefit the rest of my life. So for the three weeks I stuck rigidly to the plan, and didn’t at anytime feel like I was dieting. The food was great and there was plenty of it. The rules could even be bent a little as long as I kept within certain guidelines.
My mum also decided she wanted to lose a bit of weight and decided to follow the same plan with me. Admittedly having someone to do it with made it easier as we could go out to eat together and not feel forced into straying from our own rules.

After the first week we noticed a significant change in our weight and also felt much more energetic and awake, the second week had a bit of a lull and I guess this would usually be the point of stopping once the results had started to slow a little, but we kept on track and completed the third week with remarkable results at the end of it. My mum had lost and entire stone (14lbs), and I was now weighing in at 9 stone 8, just over 137lbs, a loss of 23lbs

As you can imagine, we were more than happy with the results. We’d lost the weight in a slow and steady manner and found that not only did we feel better and more alert but also we had actually changed the way we thought about food. We hoped that this factor would be enough to help keep the weight off, rather than slowly watch it creep back on.

This all happened back in 2008 and any doubters out there should know that my mum and I have kept the weight off. I’m actually weighing in now at around an average of 134lbs and can honestly say, that even with holidays, Christmas etc, the weight has never once gone back above 10stone (140lbs) Surely testimony enough that this thing should work. Sure the weight goes up and down a bit, but I’ve never wanted to become obsessive about it. I can put on a few pounds every now and then but am easily able to get it off again by sticking to a few small rules for a short time.

I’ve never understood people who say they’ve lost or gained 1lb, this happens to everyone, everyday. Losing weight doesn’t need to become obsessive or boring or make you unhappy. However, I wasn’t satisfied with just mine and my mums weight loss, what if we’d been a fluke, what if it didn’t work for anyone else. Aha, time for an experiment I thought. We pushed the diet sheet out to anyone who was interested. There appeared to be success all over the board and while I’m not claiming that every single person had the same massive weight loss effect as myself. Everyone who took it seriously and stuck to the rules for just 3 short weeks, all saw a significant drop in their weight. There were a few who saw only small weight losses, but when asked, admitted that they didn’t really stick to it much.

Still even with my small experiment on other people, it has to be remembered that everyone is different and as with any diet, the effects can never be guaranteed.
